Chippendale Walnut Spice Box
This is a reproduction of a Chippendale Walnut Spice Box featured in Furniture and Its Makers of Chester County, Pennsylvania by Margaret Schiffer. The original box was signed "Made by Rich Riley 1773" and was constructed from walnut with poplar as the secondary wood. The dimensions of this piece are 23" high, 15" wide and 9" deep.
I was able to find a gorgeous piece of crotch walnut for the main door as well as the small individual interior drawer fronts. The customer's initials and a date were carved on the central interior drawer front. The spice box is constructed with traditional hand cut dovetail and mortise and tenon joinery. The hardware selected for this piece were reproduction quality brass knobs and a reproduction lock. The spice box features two secret compartments.
